Mayra — Security Guard (Texas)
“For the first time, I have a true career”
My role/What my typical day looks like
[I try to get to work a little early so I can take time to talk to the team leader about how what’s been going on.] By 9am, I try to have short one-on-ones with everyone on my team. I like to check on how everyone is doing personally, because what is happening at home impacts work life. At the morning team meeting, I make sure everyone has the equipment and supplies they need to do their jobs, like clean uniforms and radios. After that I turn to paperwork. I make rounds in the afternoon, checking in again with the officers to make sure everything is going smoothly.How/why I chose to work at DS
Initially, I was just looking for a job as a source of income to supplement my earnings from my food truck business. But when I started talking with DS, I realized there was real potential for growth. It was clear that they wanted to know what I was interested in, so they could find the right fit for me based not just on what I’ve done in the past but what I enjoyed doing.
What I love about DS
The unconditional support that I get from the captains and divisional directors. [My supervisors are definitely focused on us all being professional and doing great work, but I also feel comfortable asking them questions.] It makes all the difference knowing that I can trust the whole team, and that they have my back. At the end of my day, when I go home, I feel good about the work I’ve done. It’s a great feeling to have.
What my future looks like
Working here has made me realize that this is much more than just a job. For the first time, I have a true career. Since day one, my supervisors have seen me as much more than an employee punching the clock. They see my dedication and my potential. The team leaders motivate me and are helping me build my skill set. [I’m excited to bring those skills to others.] I was recently promoted, and my goal is to keep growing as a manager and help lead the security division one day.
